Dynamics 365 is a native cloud product – but there are also other possibilities
Dynamics has been on a long journey since the first versions of Axapta in 1998, via the Microsoft transformation to Dynamics AX, and most recently to the Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations cloud product.
The new version makes it possible to use the solution in the cloud, whereas all previous versions required installation on proprietary servers or in a hosting centre.
Dynamics 365 is a true native cloud product, where both the application and data lie in the cloud. More specifically, in Microsoft Azure, which is Microsoft’s data centre.
However, some companies may have requirements that conflict with cloud technology. These might be requirements for offline operation if the Internet connection is temporarily lost, or regulatory requirements that the system be hosted locally.
That is why Dynamics 365 is offered as both alternatives, or as a hybrid of the two. The three different platforms are called:
- Local Business Data
Dynamics 365 is designed and built for the cloud. The cloud version is therefore clearly the best, and what Bredana Axcite strongly recommends. It has a simple organisation that functions optimally.
The entire application and all data is stored in the cloud. This means that nothing has to be installed on a single PC, and the solution can be used anywhere via a browser with Internet access.
Local Business Data
In this model, synchronisation with the cloud is disabled. This means that all data is only stored on the company’s own servers. The model therefore has the great limitation that the built-in integrations with other products in Azure cannot be used. These include functions such as Power BI and Machine Learning. The latter is used to prepare forecasts, which therefore cannot be used.
This solution is a combination that it makes it possible to continue operation even if the Internet connection is down. This means that the solution continues to run on the local server, and data is synchronised once the connection is re-established.
